More specifically, the presence of an antigen-specific antibody in a given sample indicates that the B cell successfully activated a T cell. While the presence of antigen-specific antibodies, particularly antigen-specific IgG, can indicate the presence of activated T cells, it cannot indicate if the activated T cells are of a type that are required for maintaining the long-term immune response. Furthermore, the presence of an antigen-specific antibody alone can be insufficient to indicate whether the T-cell mediated immune response is functional. In some cases, the B cells may not successfully activate the required T cells, or the activated T cells may not be required to maintain the immune response.
